In the mid 1940's, Edward R. Stettinius, Jr., former Secretary of State under President Roosevelt and a member of the board of directors of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway came to a realization. He had noted that many of the nation's top corporate executives - individuals charged with the financial stability of their own corporations, which in turn benefited the financial health of the United States economy - tended to age prematurely due to neglecting their own health.
Stettinius was no doubt familiar with the sort of thorough examinations the late President Roosevelt had undergone and it was Stettinius's belief that if such in-depth examinations could be administered to executives, health problems discovered through them could potentially be counteracted before they became serious. Furthermore, if the tests could be given in a more relaxing setting than a doctor's office, the executives might be more inclined to take them. Stettinius even had the perfect location for such a clinic: The Greenbrier Hotel, in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. Thus Greenbrier Executive Health Care was born.
