Director of Wine

Brian McClure

Brian McClure, Director of WineBefore his career in hospitality, Brian spent over a decade teaching history. Originally from New York State, he worked in restaurants and hotels, in both the back and front of the house, on his way to two graduate school degrees. He fell in love with wine while training and working as a Sommelier at the Sagamore Resort in Lake George in the mid-1990’s. During that time, he was exposed to some of the best wines in the world—what he likes to call “epiphany wines.” The passion was sparked and his palate began to sharpen as he became fascinated by flavor profiles in food and wine and all the influences that help constitute them.

He left the profession in the late-90’s to pursue a teaching career, but his knowledge of, and passion for, wine continued to grow. His travels brought him to wine regions all over the new and old worlds including California, Oregon, Italy, and France, where he has visited every major growing region. Eventually overwhelmed with a desire to pursue his increasing passion, he decided it was time for a career change. He began studying with the WSET and today holds the Level 4 Diploma degree. His first foray back in the industry came when he took on the role of Wine Director at the Lake Placid Lodge, a Relais & Chateau resort in the beautiful Olympic region. Within a year, expanded the program to over 1,600 selections and 8,000 bottles and won the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence. In 2013, he became the Wine Director, and later Beverage Director, at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, where he directs a $10 million program including thirteen different beverage outlets, with four distinct wine lists in the fine dining outlets and eleven different glass programs. In 2015, Brian will apply to enter the Master of Wine three-year program, one of the highest standards within the professional community.
